A common Gregorian year has 365 days; a leap year has 366.

That single extra day is why exact age, date spans, and days-lived milestones cannot be safely calculated as years multiplied by 365.

The calendar rule

Years divisible by four are usually leap years. Century years must be divisible by 400 as well. Therefore 2000 had 366 days, while 1900 and 2100 have 365. Over a 400-year Gregorian cycle there are 97 leap years, producing an average of 365.2425 days per year. That average is useful for astronomy and rough estimates, not for an individual date calculation.

Worked example

From January 1, 2023 to January 1, 2025 there are 731 days because 2024 contributes February 29. The shortcut two × 365 returns 730 and loses a real date boundary. For a 10,000-day milestone, only adding 10,000 calendar days identifies the actual result date.

Safe use

Use days divided by seven for total weeks plus a remainder. Treat months and years as calendar components, not fixed-length conversions. Approximate hours and minutes can be shown as days × 24 and days × 1,440 only when time of birth is unknown and the approximation is labeled.
