Observed dates
Every date here is computed from the statute's rules by the same code the calculator uses, then checked against the open-source holidays library for every year from 1978 to 2099.

Read the 2028 column with care. January 1, 2028 is a Saturday, so the New Year holiday is observed on Friday, December 31, 2027. That puts two holidays in December 2027 and none on New Year's week in January 2028.
The weekend rule
For employees on a Monday to Friday schedule, a holiday that falls on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before. A holiday that falls on a Sunday is observed on the Monday after. The Sunday rule comes from 5 U.S.C. 6103(b). The Saturday rule comes from Executive Order 11582.
Five holidays never need the rule because they are defined as a weekday: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (third Monday in January), Washington's Birthday (third Monday in February), Memorial Day (last Monday in May), Labor Day (first Monday in September), and Columbus Day (second Monday in October). Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday in November. The other five have fixed dates and move when they hit a weekend.
| Fixed-date holiday | Weekend years, 2026 to 2030 |
| Independence Day, July 4 | 2026 (Saturday, observed Friday July 3) and 2027 (Sunday, observed Monday July 5) |
| Juneteenth, June 19 | 2027 (Saturday, observed Friday June 18) |
| Christmas Day, December 25 | 2027 (Saturday, observed Friday December 24) |
| New Year's Day, January 1 | 2028 (Saturday, observed Friday December 31, 2027) |
| Veterans Day, November 11 | 2028 (Saturday, observed Friday November 10) and 2029 (Sunday, observed Monday November 12) |
Working days per month
Each cell counts Monday to Friday dates in the month, minus observed federal holidays. The figure in brackets is how many holidays were removed. Use it to check a payroll month, a billing cycle, or a project estimate without counting a calendar by hand.
Working days per month after weekends and US federal holidays are removed.

| Year total | 250 | 249 | 250 | 250 | 250 |
2027 has 249 working days, one fewer than the years around it, because it absorbs the observed New Year holiday that belongs to 2028.
Who follows this calendar, and who does not
The statute sets holidays for federal employees. Other calendars start from it and change it:
- Banks and the Federal Reserve. Federal Reserve Banks close on the federal holidays, but when a holiday falls on a Saturday they stay open on the Friday before. On July 3, 2026, federal offices are closed and Reserve Banks are open. Payment processing follows the Reserve Bank schedule.
- Stock markets. The New York Stock Exchange sets its own list. It closes on Good Friday, which is not a federal holiday, and stays open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day.
- Private employers. No federal law requires a private employer to give paid time off on federal holidays. Your employment contract or handbook decides.
- States. States add their own holidays, such as Cesar Chavez Day in California or Patriots' Day in Massachusetts and Maine. They are not in these tables.
- Inauguration Day. January 20 every four years is a holiday only for federal employees in the Washington, DC area. The next one, January 20, 2029, falls on a Saturday. It is not in these tables.
Extra closures a rule cannot predict
A president can close executive agencies for an extra day by executive order. Recent examples closed agencies on December 24 in 2019, 2020, and 2024. These orders usually arrive a week or two ahead, so no table can list them in advance. If your count depends on federal office days near Christmas, check the Office of Personnel Management announcements that December.
How the dates were added over time
The calculator applies each holiday from the year it began. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was first observed in 1986. Juneteenth National Independence Day became law on June 17, 2021, and was first observed on Friday, June 18, 2021. So a working-day count for 2019 removes 10 holidays, and the same count for 2022 removes 11.
Holiday rules cover 1978 to 2099. For a range outside those years, the calculator still counts weekdays and says which years it could not adjust.
Count a range with these holidays
Open the calculator, choose Working days, and set Public holidays to remove to US federal holidays. The result lists each removed holiday by name, so you can strike out any your employer does not observe. The working days guide explains the counting rule and the spreadsheet formulas that give the same answer.
